Mr Finch-Fletchley -
Congratulations on joining the sett! I understand you had a pleasant conversation with the Sorting Hat last night, and that we'll be welcoming you next year. I'm certain your yearmates will welcome you with all the grace I'd expect of our shared house, but if you do have any need for assistance, please let me or Professor Sprout know.
(She - and I - are a bit more hands on than many others, in terms of the House. She often stops by the Common Room before breakfast, and I stop by regularly before supper, but you can always send us a note, or stop by our offices or workspaces.)
Related, I'm sure you've been told the basics already about Hannah Abbott's death last year, but if you've additional questions, we'd rather you bring them to Professor Sprout or to me, rather than to students in the house. At least for the initial round. It is still, as you can imagine, a difficult subject for many of them.
Beyond that, though, I'm writing - and I'm hoping you'll excuse the message rather than finding a more private route, but I'm a bit pressed for time - because you and I should talk, at least briefly, about the plans for your summer that involve the YPL and CCF activities. (We should also discuss your astronomy background, but that's far less urgent.)
I've already been in contact with Mr Rosier regarding some ideas, and with the Jugsons, but in order to determine some specifics, we should discuss some of your coursework in more detail, so that we can catch you up on specific skills if needed. (Also, as I forgot to inquire of Mr Rosier: do you swim? It is relevant for the CCF weeks this summer.)
Do you have time either tomorrow or Friday afternoon, at 3:30? I expect the conversation would take perhaps half an hour, but I'd prefer to pick a time when other students wouldn't be around my office.

Date: 2012-06-07 02:03 am (UTC)Thank you very much. I hope the Protectorate continues to present me with such warm welcomes.
Regarding Miss Abbott, Professor, I shouldn't think there's much I need to ask. You see, I've become rather a chum of Mr Longbottom's, as well as Miss Perks's. I daresay they've told me what I need to know. But please be assured I shall behave with sensitivity toward my housemates, indeed toward all the school, in respect of her memory.
As far as Astronomy, I hope I haven't embarrassed myself thus far. My tutors in France were rather good when it came to the importance of charts and so on. I rather liked star-gazing, as well, when one could see the night sky. Living alongside Muggles, of course, one's opportunities were rare. But Beauxbatons had the advantage of an excellent view for celestial observations. Perhaps Professor Froissart has mentioned it. In any event, yes, of course, it's natural that all my new professors will want an accounting of my studies so far.
Yes, I do swim. I've taken a water safety course as well. Is that helpful? I was thinking of taking a lifeguard's course but I wasn't old enough last summer. I suppose I ought to ask if the Protectorate has similar opportunities. Has it?
I'm sure I shall be able to visit, Professor, but I am still trying to complete my assignments for Beauxbatons to finish out the year. If I don't finish the essay I'm working on tomorrow, could I come Friday instead? I do appreciate the need for discretion until the announcement can be made official.

Date: 2012-06-07 02:17 am (UTC)If you're not free tomorrow, Friday would be fine. If you can send a note, that would be excellent, but if I don't see you by three forty-five, I'll assume you couldn't get free and might be elsewhere than my office after that.
On the Astronomy, no, your work has been quite solid, or you'd have heard about it long before this.
That said, there are always the small things that can catch one up - different terminology, for example. And in our year three, I cover a small amount of foundational theory related to the applications to arithmancy and locational magics that you may not have covered yet (and that is touched upon in the OWL exams.) Nothing that can't be fixed easily with a little review, though I'd just want to make sure there isn't anything else of that kind.
On the swimming - I've heard about lifeguarding, but it's not at all common here in the Protectorate, no. Generally people either swim, or they don't, and they look out for themselves or their friends or children or what have you. I'm sure we'll find plenty of other outlets to improve your skills, however.
Again, welcome.
