Thank you

I am overwhelmed by all those who were able to join us and celebrate on Saturday, and by everyone who’s offered good wishes for our marriage. More personal notes will be going out shortly, around our commitments at school.

For those curious about the details of the wedding, Tallie Powell (our planner) plans a series of entries in her journal highlighting many of the contributions to the day. There are a few questions nearly everyone seemed to have, so I hope answering them here will help.

My name: For a variety of reasons, I intend to remain Professor Sinistra in professional settings. I am delighted to now be Mrs Lestrange in social settings.

Raz and I currently expect to be in New London over the summer, but our precise plans and obligations are still a work in progress, and will be for a few weeks, at least.

Finally, I understand some were curious about the stars projected in the reception rooms. This is a varation of a method I developed for teaching over the last few years. Once term is over, I’d be glad to discuss further with anyone interested.

Students, we especially appreciate all your good wishes and congratulations, and we wish you could all have joined us. There will be a special treat tomorrow night at supper, as our last bit of formal celebration, and to ease into end of term exams. For those with questions, I will be in my office until half nine tonight, but no later, and hours are posted for the rest of the week.

In brief, since I had to dash to the Guild:

No pink.

No pink flowers, no pink decorations on the desserts, no pink napkins. (Nor pink sugared almonds, nor pink umbrellas in drinks, nor pink decorative bunting, nor pink charmed glitter, nor pink glowing mists, nor pink cherubs. Not that any of those should appear anyway.) No pink.

Instruct me, if you would, on the best way to make this abundantly clear to all concerned. Fit that can be heard clear to Hogwarts? Visit by Raz, at his sternest? Transfiguration of their hair colour until they see reason? Harassment by a swarm of kittens? En masse synchronised performance by my assembled female relatives, a la Greek chorus?

I'm already planning owls in the clearest possible terms, but anything else, please tell, and I will arrange it. Pity the penultimate one wouldn't actually help: it would give them something to do. Besides owl and firecall and journal me at all hours with "Just one little suggestion, dear." all of which are either entirely impractical, absolutely horrible, or (often) both.

Flowers: modern roses if he must, to fill things out, but I'd much rather things from the bouquet, or the species names Mum gave him. I know I lack artistic vision in the matter of flowers. I don't care. The other things smell wrong.

Dress: entirely splendid, and Joosh assures me that while a fitting in a fortnight would be best, we could make it work the day before if we had to. (And then gave me a ten minute lecture on doing nothing that might alter the shape of my body in the interim, and another ten minutes on managing the shoes. I've achieved 'stable' but am not quite at 'confident' yet. Clearly, I will be pacing my office this week.)

I hope to be in next Tuesday, but just in case OWLS eat all the available time and space (not as unlikely as I'd prefer, they're all quite nervy), I think we're in reasonable enough shape. I hope. You've got the hours I'm likely to be handy if you've questions, and I've got my list of the last few things Raz or I need to do ourselves.

(And if I've not said it enough, you have worked magic upon magic already getting the invites out and keeping everything straight.)

Mum -

Today, just for a change, could it not be about Diane? I cannot believe she's been whining to you about this. I was supposed to get married today, and it's killing tearing me apart.

I have spent two fucking months not being able to talk in private with Raz. Except for Valentine's, which was more "We need to postpone the wedding" than anything pleasant. (Necessary, yes. Loving, yes. The conversation I wanted to be having? No.)

No marking. No supper chats. No random hours when we're both free. No nights And I don't know when - because I'm clinging to 'when, not if' as hard as I can - we get them back. When we can go back to talking. To spending time together. To planning a wedding. (I don't care about the wedding. I'd run off with him tonight except it wouldn't help.)

And there's all the endless miseries, what she's doing to the school. To his classes. To me. To anyone who comes within her reach.

So don't give me "Diane is so upset." She's not. She wants to play status games, and she wants people to look up to her, and if that's what she wants as her hobby, well, fine. But she doesn't get to decide my life, and especially when she doesn't know all the details and the reasons and the choices we're trying to juggle. And if she doesn't get that through her head - well. I do have limits. And I am very near them.

Don't push. Not today. Of all days. Not the day when I thought at least one thing would become real and solid and stand a chance of staying that way. Really, Mum. I thought better of you.

The flowers - well. They do go well together. I just wish

First, a reminder to our fifth, sixth, and seventh years that the first of our observing opportunities for meteor showers - the Draconids - is coming up this weekend. Depending on the weather, you should have the opportunity either Sunday or Monday not too long after sunset. I’ll be up on the tower after supper both nights until around 9 for those who wish to observe.

(Again, you’re expected to do some brief observations across at least two of the three upcoming meteor showers, weather reasonably permitting. Consult your notes or come by office hours if you are still confused about my expectations. You will in all cases want to work with a partner - it makes things much easier - and doing so is required if you’re out of your dorms outside of curfew.)

Looking ahead, I will not be available on Saturday, the 20th, but the Orionids should - if the weather holds - be most visible between midnight and dawn on the 19th, 20th, 21st, and 22nd. Those who wish to stay up on Friday night are welcome to come up the tower at midnight if the weather’s clear (though my 3rd years will be working on a different assignment.) Pre-dawn viewing, you are on your own, but I am glad to arrange permissions as needed.

And second, just a reminder on my office hours - you all know I’m glad to be available. However, I do generally plan to be done at 9pm, and often have some other tasks calling my attention. If you have a longer or more complex question, please do come earlier in the session, or arrange a time with me privately. (I do have to have time to do all your marking, after all!)

Office hours Saturday, 2-5, as well as my usual this week. Do stop by, if you’re worrying about your work so far. Or if you just want to chat. (I promise biscuits, tea and tisane, and maybe other treats.)

5th years: I know some of you are worried already about exams. I expect to have all your charts marked by Friday, but so far I’m not seeing any unwelcome surprises - and a few pleasant ones. (Remember you can always arrange to do practice charts, especially as we take a break for a few weeks for other topics.)

7th years: I’ve had a few questions about the topic list. Again, the list is just to get you thinking. I’m glad to consider any project that can be done and written up in the course of the school year. (Can be practical, theoretical or a mix.) Come talk to me if you’re still confused.

All my NEWTs: With the unusually large jump in size of our 2nd year class (especially as they’re starting the complications of chart work) I could really use another pair of hands or two during our practical sessions until they’re more comfortable with the process. If any of you would be willing to help out, (without shorting yourself on sleep, mind), please talk to me. They meet Thursday nights, or see below.

2nd years who’d like more time and feedback than our hour allows, I’m also looking to set up some additional sessions with the projection stones (or the last hour before curfew, if it’s clear) where we can work in smaller groups: please come to class with some times that might work for you.

In New London for the afternoon, a combination of errands and catching up with two of my sisters. It is amazing how quickly things fall into place after just a week or two back at school, really - I’ve been working tidily through my list and plans, and it’s so satisfying to see things checked off.

The weather, alas, not so much - we’ve had some glorious stargazing weather the last week, but I’m afraid it’s the last gasps before the far more uncertain days of the fall and winter.

Temp - thanks again for rounding more of those up. And for the other set of used-book searching, too. Gilly - no worries that you had to cancel, I found other company, but next week? Could do lunch at one.
