It's a pity I can't say "I told you so", sometimes.

You know I've been arguing against synchronised marching all along (and uniforms, and patriotic songs) as a focus for the YPL time.

This weekend so far has been a rather nice illustration of why. All the people who overruled me have not the slightest idea how to get thirty three students all pointed in the same direction at once. (33, incidentally, is a horrible number to try and arrange in any kind of pretty marching order, no matter the arithmantic possibilities).

And as they keep refusing my suggestions of oh, how to manage students I've worked with for years, I am currently sitting on a stone wall in the sunshine and catching up on my journal reading. It's a pleasant enough distraction from about eight other things I'd rather not be thinking about.

I do think it will come out all right on the day - even the students who I expect would like it just to be over with are doing their best to learn the necessary pieces. And I think the end result should be rather appropriately showy if it comes off right. But really. Is this the best thing we could be spending a dozen hours on? (Not counting all the prep time, of course.)

I do hope both of you are well, and Poppy, that your latest round of mandatory education is not too dire. You may expect to avoid Stint, at least largely, as he plans to be here part of most days through Thursday, apparently.

My thanks to all of the examiners and CCF trials students who have helped make a complicated series of activities and challenges go as smoothly as possible. After a great deal of discussion, we are excited to announce the addition of the following students to the CCF programme.

Gareth Archer
Cressida Bode
Christophanus Clarriker
Stratus Cuthbert
Coinneach Donovan
Francois duMaurier
Isolde Inglebee
Hydra Lestrange
Luna Lovegood
Jeremy Jugson
Tristan Preece
Marjoram Montague
Honoria Sandoval
Effluvia Stevens
Darius Warrington
Ginevra Weasley

I’m also delighted to announce that the examiners have agreed that Justin Finch-Fletchley (our most recent addition to Hogwarts) should be placed with the rising 5th years (his own class) for this year’s CCF work.

Congratulations to you all! Students who were selected - along with our rising 5th year CCF members - will be getting additional information next week, once we’ve met to finish the last details of our planning.

For those students who were not selected, our examiners will be providing some additional resources and advice to help you develop your talents in other ways. As always, the CCF programme is but one way to serve the Protectorate, and it was very difficult to make the final decisions.
alt_sinistra: (in charge)
A reminder to our CCF trials students that we are looking at all aspects of your behaviour and interactions this week. If you have a difficulty you cannot resolve appropriately yourselves, please bring it to the counsellors, or you can come find me. If I’m not with the examiners, I’ll be accessible by journal and can arrange to meet up with you easily if you’d rather not climb up to my rooms or office.

To the examiners: I’ve arranged use of one of the ground floor classrooms for our discussion after supper, in consideration of Mr Bennington’s bad foot. Second door on the left in the hallway across from the entrance to the Great Hall.

It seems impossible that we’re at the end of the year - so much has happened. I know that many will be sorry to see friends and acquaintances from among our guests go, but I’m sure we’ll all enjoy the feast tonight, before seeing the contingents off tomorrow.

At the same time, I do look forward to the summer activities, and then to what next year might bring. And I’ve had a few questions about the summer.

CCF: 4th and 5th years will be participating the same weeks - July 27th to August 18th. You’ll have separate housing and facilities, and largely separate training, but will be working with the same instructors, and sharing some special activities. More information will be sent home as soon as we’ve finished our committee meetings - you should expect an owl June 27th or 28th with all the details.

Students entering 2nd and 3rd year should find information about your trips waiting when you arrive home.

Mr Finch-Fletchley -

Congratulations on joining the sett! I understand you had a pleasant conversation with the Sorting Hat last night, and that we'll be welcoming you next year. I'm certain your yearmates will welcome you with all the grace I'd expect of our shared house, but if you do have any need for assistance, please let me or Professor Sprout know.

(She - and I - are a bit more hands on than many others, in terms of the House. She often stops by the Common Room before breakfast, and I stop by regularly before supper, but you can always send us a note, or stop by our offices or workspaces.)

Related, I'm sure you've been told the basics already about Hannah Abbott's death last year, but if you've additional questions, we'd rather you bring them to Professor Sprout or to me, rather than to students in the house. At least for the initial round. It is still, as you can imagine, a difficult subject for many of them.

Beyond that, though, I'm writing - and I'm hoping you'll excuse the message rather than finding a more private route, but I'm a bit pressed for time - because you and I should talk, at least briefly, about the plans for your summer that involve the YPL and CCF activities. (We should also discuss your astronomy background, but that's far less urgent.)

I've already been in contact with Mr Rosier regarding some ideas, and with the Jugsons, but in order to determine some specifics, we should discuss some of your coursework in more detail, so that we can catch you up on specific skills if needed. (Also, as I forgot to inquire of Mr Rosier: do you swim? It is relevant for the CCF weeks this summer.)

Do you have time either tomorrow or Friday afternoon, at 3:30? I expect the conversation would take perhaps half an hour, but I'd prefer to pick a time when other students wouldn't be around my office.
alt_sinistra: (watching more than the skies)
Don’t feel you need to answer until you’ve a chance. I caught a tiny bit of it, but what on earth happened?

I was coming back from New London, and ran into Cedric on my way back in - he had quite a few things he wanted to ask about the third task. I’d like to consult with you on a couple, but, well, they can wait.

But then Harry comes running back up just as we were coming in the main door - looking for you and Poppy, he said - and something had clearly happened. But right at that moment, Isolde Inglebee came looking for Poppy, as Adelaide Zimmerman was having hysterics, and I went off to deal with that, once Harry said you were on your way down.

I’m back up the tower now - teaching midnight to one, but if you want company after, just let me know and I'll come down (or make yourself at home in my rooms.)

New London was fine. (Mum sends love, Gilly approves of my taking time to relax, there’s yet another complication with the CCF. You could set a clock by all three. The last's manageable, thankfully.)

YPL
A reminder that our final YPL event of the year will begin at 1pm Saturday in the Great Hall, though if the weather cooperates, we’ll move outside for the second half. We’ll be welcoming various speakers on International Wizarding Relations for a panel discussion, then hearing several people speak to wizarding cooperation and sport.

CCF trials announcements:
We’re delighted to be able to announce that the lists of those 3rd years selected to participate in the CCF trials are posted in the common rooms. For the students selected, please see me during office hours for more information. Letters are being sent home to your parents about your travel arrangements.

As always, we want to reassure everyone that this is but one way to serve the Protectorate, and that we’ve provided some alternate guidance and ideas privately to everyone not selected to continue.

YPL 6th or 7th year counsellors:
We’d like to have four of you stay during the trial week (ideally one from each house) to assist with some pieces of the trials and also to supervise students in the evenings. Please let me know if you’re interested as soon as possible.
alt_sinistra: woman looking down, away from the camera, hair in her face. (did I mention I'm busy?)
I’m delighted to have seen so many excellent YPL counsellor applications come already in this year - just a reminder that to be considered, I will need to have your application in hand by 9am on May 1st. It’s quite clear it will be extremely challenging to make our selections, but it’s wonderful to read your thoughts and ideas. We currently expect to arrange interviews the week of the 7th, but may need to stretch that out, depending on various schedules.

Third years: applications for the CCF programme are now available on my door. They’ll be due on Monday, May 7th.

Fifth years: I’ve been marking your charts from last Friday, and clearly a number of you could benefit from additional time with the exam-format charts. Please come prepared with your calendars to lecture on Friday, so we can arrange some times for further practice sessions before the rapidly approaching OWLs.

Seventh years: I'm delighted to say (but not at all surprised) that you're quite a bit better off, though there's a few fine details we should continue to work on. Remember that your independent projects are due the 4th, and that I still have some time available if you want to review your results before turning in your final work.

A moment for the stars: it’s a particularly good week for spotting several asteroids, namely Astraea, Hebe, and Flora, all found within Leo this week. And Venus is particularly bright right now, though you’ll need to come up between sunset and curfew to have a good look - she’s set by the time we start class. I plan to be around the tower Wednesday and Friday evenings if the weather’s clear, if anyone wants help taking a look at either.
alt_sinistra: (in charge)
Good afternoon! Now that we’ve returned to school, a few notes. Questions on any of the following, do stop by and see me. (And I’ll be in my office this afternoon and evening, as well as the other usual hours.) In particular:

The mural project
The dedication and final presentation of the new mural will take place this coming Saturday, April 21st, at 2:30pm, (by the mural, naturally). Everyone in the castle is welcome to attend, and there will be some refreshments. Mrs Pencarrow will be finalising some of the charms and remaining details this week: schedule is posted by the mural and on the board by the stairs to the astronomy tower.

Summer plans
We’re continuing to work on details for the YPL and CCF summer plans - keep an eye out for more announcements in the next week or two. For first years, I can confirm the camping trip (as always with a few new activities), and for the second years, our two New London trips.

Fourth Years
I’m delighted to say we have a larger than usual number of openings for 4th years interested in being YPL counsellors for younger students. We anticipate our counsellors will participate in one trip each this summer (with a small number of the most senior counsellors assisting with the CCF programme weeks). The process involves an application form (available from me now), some short situational questions, and a brief interview.

Third Years
For current 3rd years: we will be beginning the CCF application process a little earlier this year than last. Our process will be roughly the same as last year - a written application, a letter to someone in a field you may wish to explore after leaving school, and then further detailed testing after the end of the school year.

I want to emphasise again that not being selected is not a comment on a particular student’s skills, loyalty, or magical ability: it simply means that the selectors feel that the CCF is not the programme best suited to developing that person's potential and service to the Protectorate. We anticipate selecting 15-16 students again this year.
alt_sinistra: (distracted)
I’ve worked out the lists for the Newcastle and New London day trips: you should receive confirmation at lunch today one way or the other. Thank you for your patience and understanding as we coordinate staffing and other details.

We still have a few remaining spaces for CCF students for the Yorkshire Dales trip (8th April), and for both CCF and YPL students for the Cambridge visit (11th April). Please see me today if you are still interested. Confirmation notes about those trips will be out tomorrow.

You are reminded that your parents are responsible for getting you to the central meeting point in New London each day: specifics will be sent to them later this week, or they may confirm with Felix Green in the WEA office if they have other logistics questions. Basic expenses (including meals and any admission fees) will be covered by the programme, but you may wish to bring pocket money for extras. Promptness and exemplary behaviour are both expected and required.

I’m glad to take questions here. Otherwise, I’ll be in my office during my usual Monday hours after supper.
alt_sinistra: woman looking down, away from the camera, hair in her face. (did I mention I'm busy?)
Thursday: Ms Chadwick will be here to present about her recent work in telescope design, and more about the general opportunities for those interested in creating new magical tools and resources. Half-seven, in my classroom, to start.

YPL: I understand that some of the plans for our guests during their time in New London over the holidays will allow for some of our students to join them on some days. Details of the itinerary are still in process, but you may wish to inquire of your parents or guardians about their plans for your time, and which days you might be available. (Your parent, guardian, or other suitable adult would be responsible for transportation to and from a central location in New London yet to be determined. I would be glad to discuss the planned events if they have any questions.)

CCF students: In about two weeks, we'll be meeting to do the specific planning for your continued training this summer (along with the other YPL summer plans). If you have any comments in hindsight about particular aspects of your experience, the selection process, the various exercises, or other details, I'd love to hear them before we leave for Easter holidays. Please stop by my office hours, or arrange another mutually agreeable time to talk.

Fourth years: A reminder that we are meeting for two hours tonight (beginning at 11 this evening) to make up for last week. Thanks again for your willingness to make the change. You needn't bring your telescopes: if the weather does by chance let up a little, I'll have a couple of specialised scopes handy that suit our topic for the evening.

And my own schedule: I do plan to be around this afternoon and evening (rather than my usual Tuesday plans), should you wish to stop by with a question or comment.
alt_sinistra: (in charge)
Congratulations to all the hard work of all three teams yesterday. I understand from the planning staff that there will be some additional individual feedback forthcoming for our CCF students, but overall, they were quite pleased with your creative problem-solving and approach to the various challenges. And to our guests, I hope you enjoyed the outing.

An event of this complexity takes many people’s time and effort: we could not have conducted these exercises without the efforts of the attending CCF planning staff, Aurors, Auror trainees, MLE staff, and Healer Kerr. They gave up a Saturday to join us, and I’m sure we all appreciate their time and careful attention.

My particular thanks to Mr Smith, Miss Bones, and Mr Macmillan for their help (and to their respective team leaders for the loan), and especially to Mr Smith for his quick thinking. As you may have heard by now, Miss Haley is quite recovered and back in her dorm.

Planning meeting: this Saturday, 21st January:
CCF members should plan on meeting from 2-4 pm. All other participants (final lists were posted in your common rooms on Monday) should plan on meeting from 3-4 pm. Again, we regret that the size of the group is limited for this event.

2pm: CCF students will receive their team assignments (as part of the goal is to challenge you to work together, you will not be able to pick your own teams.) You will be told the basics of the event, and have the opportunity to ask questions, clarify instructions, etc.

3pm: The planners of the day’s challenges will share some important practical and safety information with all participants. Following that, each group of team leaders will choose the rest of its members from among the other participating students and have time to talk and make some initial plans.

Overall:
The winners of the event will be determined based on points awarded for completing specific goals. You are reminded that one of the goals of this event is to see how you use resources - you’ve been given a week’s planning time for a reason, in other words.

January 28th:
All participants should meet in the entry hall at quarter to 9. We will be leaving promptly at 9am and anyone who is not present and ready will be left behind. We expect to return by 4pm, and CCF students will have an additional post-event debriefing until dinner time.

Again, you are expected to dress appropriately for the weather and to follow all instructions about well-being and safety given to you by any of the adult staff, including the attending Aurors and Auror trainees. Further rules and limits will be clearly discussed this coming Saturday.

Back to classes, after some lovely holidays. We’re currently in that glorious week or so where I’m entirely caught up on all my marking and correspondence, I’ve had plenty of time for research on the tower, and quite my share of social outings and other enjoyments. Never does last more than a week or two, but that’s all to the good, really, as it means there’s something new to look forward to.

CCF, YPL, and guests:
It is time to turn our attention to our next outing, on January 28th. The event will be an all-day outdoor strategy event held off Hogwarts grounds, with three teams, each lead by a group of our CCF students (for whom the event is mandatory).

For all who wish to attend there will be a required planning meeting on January 21st at 2pm. The day of, we will depart at 9am, and return around 4pm. CCF students will be expected to attend a post-event debriefing following our return, finishing by dinner time.

We welcome:
- Our guests, as team participants.
- Third year and non-CCF fourth year students as team participants.
- A limited number of first and second year students to assist with various tasks.

Due to logistics, we have a more limited number of places for this event than our usual. Everyone participating should be comfortable with extended outdoor exposure and exertion, skilled with at least one long-duration warming charm, and be willing to work together in assigned teams to reach a mutual goal. Previous active participation in YPL events and recent behaviour will be used to determine attendees if we have more interest than places.

If you wish to be considered, please sign up on the board outside my office no later by 8am on Sunday.

On another note:
I’ve also been thinking about my past year. I’ve never particularly subscribed to resolutions, as much as goals, but I am quite pleased with the ongoing growth of the YPL and CCF programmes, the completion of the chart projection charm project (and related publication), and the usual progress in teaching and learning that happen all the time in my classroom.

This coming year, I’m looking forward to a new research project (made possible by a shiny new telescope) and continuing the work of the past few years in a variety of areas.
alt_sinistra: (smiling inside)
I do want to second Miss Clearwater's compliments and congratulations: excellently done, all of you, for representing Hogwarts in the best possible tradition.

My very deep thanks to the Prefects, YPL counsellors, and to the CCF for all doing their part to coordinate all manner of tasks, and I'm delighted everything went so smoothly. And the surprise of hearing "Hey, Hey Merlin" by two of our own was amazing. Excellent work, both of you!

For those who need to return borrowed robes, or perhaps want an ear for any reason, I'll be up in my office for much of the later morning and afternoon, until about four, outside of lunch. (I've also got a fair selection of the press coverage, if anyone wants to have a look.)

Splendid

CCF students, beautifully done clearing the way for the dancing to begin, and thank you again for all your gracious assistance welcoming all our honoured guests tonight.

Everyone else, what a glorious evening. Do enjoy yourselves!

I’m in New London for two days of YPL meetings. It’s hard to be away from Hogwarts - and a long list of things that need attention - but a change in routine is also surprisingly pleasant.

I’ve never been a morning person, and apparating over distance first thing is worse, so I made sure to get here in plenty of time for a walk to clear my head before we started our meetings this morning. But that’s given me time to be delighted by the shop windows, particularly this year’s fashion for sparkling light charms - so delicate - and the wider color palette.

I saw a gorgeous window in silvers and blues and purples, as well as many with more classic greens, reds, and golds. And of course, the charmed displays are wonderful: my favorite was several windows of Hogwarts and Hogsmeade in winter with a cunningly done Quidditch match in progress. And there’s the smell of pine in the air, and the clusters of little stalls, and banners snapping in the breeze... And of course, a pleasant little pastry at one of the nearby cafes to put me in the best possible mood before we started this morning.

I’m looking forward to being able to make a great deal of progress with the YPL plans for this spring and summer, but also a few chances to relax. I’m eagerly anticipating a performance tonight and then there’s dinner with my parents tomorrow, and a few other errands and tasks to finish getting ready for the holidays.

Dear students and visiting guests,

Our upcoming lecture:
On December 3rd, we will welcome several medwizards, who have graciously offered their time on Saturday to share some tips on dealing with urgent injuries and crisis care. Our guests are welcome to join us for this. You will be divided into groups, spending forty-five minutes with each presenter. Please gather at 1pm in the Great Hall for the introduction, and we will split off to other spaces from there.

CCF students: you will be grouped together and cover topics in more depth, as you covered some of the basics last summer, and will also have an additional hour training session following the main presentations.

(Thanks to Miss Perks for suggesting that this would be an excellent topic.)

Preparing for the Yule Ball
CCF students and YPL counsellors are asked to assist with various small duties relating to hosting the Yule Ball. Planning sessions will take place on Thursday, December 8th or Saturday, December 10th. Please sign up on the lists by my office for one of these two times no later than this coming Thursday. Each session will last two hours and begins at 7pm.

A schedule conflict
Finally, due to YPL planning committee needs, I must be in New London on Sunday, December 11th and Monday the 12th. My classes are cancelled for that Monday, including the observing session that evening (though I will be giving you assignments to cover the missing session this week). I will obviously not be available for questions or my normal office hours during those two days. I am confident this will be the last such disruption for this school year, and appreciate your patience.

Miss Clearwater and Mister Avery, I have an additional note for you below.
alt_sinistra: black and white image of woman with short blond hair looking out of the image. (Default)
Poppy, a few quick things.

First, I think we've actually got a more or less final schedule for December 3rd. I plan to drop a copy off for you when I get a chance. It looks like there will be some interesting discussions, and some particularly useful material for the CCF group. (I'm also hopeful Raz will take Healer Stint off for a friendly drink somewhere in the midst of the afternoon, and make your life easier. And mine.)

Also, quick question for you, if you have a minute - have you had any odd encounters with Milland? Nothing urgent, but if you have time on Monday, tea perhaps, and a chat? (I'm sure you're busy today with preparations we all hope you won't need for tomorrow...)
alt_sinistra: black and white image of woman with short blond hair looking out of the image. (Default)
First, my condolences to the surviving family and friends of Mr Crouch, Jr. and his mother. As some of you may be aware, Mr Crouch, Jr. was instrumental in consulting on a number of security considerations around YPL event and trip planning, and his devotion and dedication to his duty, the Protectorate, and the Lord Protector were clear in every moment of that work.

Regrettably, time continues to march forward, and we are already behind schedule in making final arrangements for this year due to the exciting recent announcement of the Tri-Wizard Tournament. We've arranged the events at Hogwarts this year to include our visiting students as much as feasible, to better demonstrate the skills, learning, and experience that our students gain through participation in the YPL programme. Further details about each activity will be forthcoming, but I wanted to make the dates available as soon as possible for all those who may need to make relevant plans.

(It is possible that one or two dates may shift over the course of the year, based on various other needs, but we believe these dates are now fairly firm.)

We have had several other interesting proposals for activities this year, and space and time allowing may make optional participation in several activities possible over breaks in classes.

October
On October 22nd, the YPL will welcome our guests with an exercise to introduce them to the grounds and other spaces of Hogwarts, giving everyone a chance to learn more about our richly historic location, and meet a variety of students. CCF students and YPL counselors should be alert for announcements about planning meetings, and will be expected to assist in the practical details of the day, all others are welcome to participate.

December
In late November and through December, YPL students in years three and up should plan on some meetings and tutorial sessions so that they may provide support at an event related to the Tri-Wizard Tournament. We anticipate these sessions will be about 2 hours in length, and happen every two or three weeks, depending on your focus.

On Saturday, December 3rd, we will welcome several medwizards for an extended lecture and training session. A general workshop will be available to all YPL members and our foreign guests, while our CCF students (who have already learned some basic material) will also attend an additional workshop with greater detail and expectations.

January
On January 28th, we will have an excursion for all YPL members that will test orienteering, strategy, and leadership skills. Students should dress warmly, and practice a variety of warming charms. Again, our foreign guests will be welcome to join us, provided they attend the preparatory meeting.

March
On March 3rd, we will welcome a visiting artist, Melete Pencarrow, who will lead YPL participants in creating a wizarding mural depicting an event in Hogwarts history. Students will do much of the background design and painting of the mural, and she will assist with details. Students will also learn about mixing pigments for wizarding paintings, the rich language of symbol in artwork, and lectures on notable painting and portrait technique illustrated by the Hogwarts portraits and other pieces. Mrs. Pencarrow will be residing in Hogsmeade for the duration to assist, with a formal presentation of the finished artwork following the spring holidays.

YPL students should allow two to three hours in their schedule each week (for the duration of the project) for a combination of small group lectures and work on the mural, though of course students wishing to contribute additional time will be welcome. Our visitors are welcome to attend the lectures on request.

May
Finally, on May 26th, we will welcome a panel of distinguished witches and wizards with great experience in international wizarding relations, including those teachers guiding our visiting guests. They will discuss and explore where the new horizons in Protectorate diplomacy made possible through the Tri-Wizard Tournament events, and what opportunities in the field might be open for students in the coming years.

Final notes
As always, all students in years one through three are welcome and encouraged to participate in the YPL and explore the opportunities available to them as future productive members of our Lord Protector's realm. Continuing beyond year three requires a greater commitment and success in a variety of skills. Students who expressed a wish to continue (via application to the CCF) last year, but who did not attend the summer training are welcome to attend general YPL activities, but will not be able to participate in the extra training and opportunities of the CCF courses.

Should you have any questions, I have a number of tasks taking my time this weekend, but you may leave a note here (a private message, if you prefer), or can find me in my office during my usual open office hours this week.
