Toshenka -

I have just spent two hours with Septima crying on my shoulder. Can you help?

I know I told you that one of her students last year failed near everything but his Arithmancy OWLS. Despite several of us doing everything we could. (And curse it, it was not enough, and Horace still holds it over me that he was right about that.) And they broke his wand, sent him to the camps.

You know she was called in Saturday to help, got shaken out of bed, spent the whole night doing calculations at the Ministry. After, it hit home just how much Thomas Capper could have helped. That he could have done the arithmancy near enough in his head.

This morning, after her class, she went to ask how he was doing. I don’t know why - no, I’m lying. I would look too. And because she’d been so helpful, someone tracked down where he - where he’d been.

He died, in October. Of all the stupid things, he fell, hit his head, and no one noticed for too long. Didn’t wake up the next morning. I don’t think his brother and sister even know.

She’s in a bad way. And she’s - all those what-ifs we talked about recently, losing students. She won’t - can’t - hear me about it. Can you come up as soon as you see this? Bring one of the books I found for her, too? I think she’ll eventually want the distraction.

This is me asking a favour. And not asking about other things. Because I can do the arithmancy on those myself. (She is not her most discreet ever - all the more reason for you to talk to her before anyone else does. For the good of the school.)

Those who need to complete the meteor observation project (fifth, sixth, or seventh years), this weekend is your last chance. Remember your analysis will be due in your daytime class meeting the week of the 19th.

The Leonids are most visible between midnight and dawn: you are welcome on the tower during class times on Thursday and Friday evening as long as you don’t disrupt class, or you can use any other suitably dark spot. If you need a note for permission to be out after curfew, please arrange it with me no later than tomorrow evening.

I am around this afternoon and evening should anyone have questions about this or other assignments.

It's rather dire in here, all things considered. You might be glad you're out waiting.

In the corner, we have Alecto, who's glowering at the world, and nearly took off the arm of the last person who came within ten feet. Not that anyone particularly wants to be near her.

Froissart's clearly not happy with any of the situation, but of course he can't do much about any of it. And Karkaroff is just looking stoic. (Though a bunch of the Durmstrang boys have started in on what must be traditional toasts, and at least that's mildly entertaining. "To the motherland!" "To the fatherland!" "To friendship!" though they're degenerating into more chaos now.)

I don't suppose your end of things is better than your fears?

Good evening, everyone. I'm sorry to be later with our announcement of the YPL counsellor selections than I'd hoped, but we had some extremely difficult choices to make this year. All our applicants turned in thoughful and interesting applications, and in many cases it came down to final details in our interviews.

We also deeply appreciate an anonymous donation that allowed us to take on one extra counsellor and solve a challenging decision among the selection committee.

For those of you selected, please stop by during my office hours to discuss the possible schedule, and there will be a brief meeting of YPL counsellors from all years to discuss summer plans at 4:15pm on Wednesday, May 30th.

Many congratulations to our new additions to the YPL counselling staff.

Susan Bones
Katrina Bundy
Michael Corner
Ernie MacMillan
Draco Malfoy
Harry Marvolo
Pansy Parkinson
Padma Patil
Sally-Anne Perks
Dean Thomas
Ron Weasley

And of course, the best of wishes to our NEWT students as they begin their exams.

My thanks to the three members of the YPL oversight board (and the invited guests) for an instructive and thoughtful conversation yesterday. I greatly appreciate your time, your decision and your feedback, and I’ll be in touch regarding various items as we discussed.

Students:
I’ll be back to my usual more varied schedule of availability in a day or two, as I finish tidying up a few loose ends. I also expect to be scheduling some practice observation times, particularly for the exam years. They’ll happen whatever the weather: if it’s cloudy, we’ll use one of the projections. Signups in my exam years first, and then they’ll be posted on the board for anyone who wants as there’s room.

A presentation:
Ms Gillian Chadwick, lead designer for the recently released Empyrean 3001 telescope, has agreed to come speak to anyone interested at Hogwarts on March 22nd. Discussion at half-seven, in my classroom, and then we’ll move outside if the weather is decent.

She’ll be discussing the telescope itself, along with the charms, runes, and arithmantic calculations involved in her design work, so there should be plenty of interest to many of you. She’ll also be bringing some of their prototype models so you can see the changes through the development cycle.

Minerva, Septima -

Horace, Pomona and I had quite the conversation last night after the meeting via journal, but in principle, we think we have something like a plan regarding Mr Capper. (Or rather, I dug in, and they seem to have come round.)

It relies on you, Septima, to convince him to buckle down and truly work from now through exams (and over the holidays, especially). If he’ll follow through, I believe we’ve enough staff willing to work with him to ensure he can pass enough OWLs to remain at school.

I am (and I still owe you that favour, besides), Brutka seemed at least open to the idea. Horace and Pomona are - grudgingly - if he can be persuaded not to waste their time. And perhaps he can either be convinced to the more Arithmantic side of Divination, or to the sheer blunt memorisation for History. (I rather agree that Charms is a dead loss, and Defence not much better.)

The other suggestion, was, perhaps arranging conversations with those in his position who both made good choices about having a variety of skills and who haven’t. Tracking down someone who’d be willing for the latter might be harder, but I can put a feeler or two out if needed - the YPL gets letters from some of them, asking for whatever advice we can offer.

Are there other students, who might benefit from that, as well, even if they’re not so badly off as Capper?

If you don’t think you can talk him round, Septima, then - well, I’m as busy as Horace and Pomona are, or more. But as long as there’s any hope, I’ll sleep better at night knowing I’ve tried, personally.

Poppy, a few quick things.

First, I think we've actually got a more or less final schedule for December 3rd. I plan to drop a copy off for you when I get a chance. It looks like there will be some interesting discussions, and some particularly useful material for the CCF group. (I'm also hopeful Raz will take Healer Stint off for a friendly drink somewhere in the midst of the afternoon, and make your life easier. And mine.)

Also, quick question for you, if you have a minute - have you had any odd encounters with Milland? Nothing urgent, but if you have time on Monday, tea perhaps, and a chat? (I'm sure you're busy today with preparations we all hope you won't need for tomorrow...)

Is it morning already? Ugh. But I have parchments calling my name at the moment, to finalise the schedule for the 3rd, and Felix really wants them before noon so he can smooth ruffled feathers.

Wanted to check in, since we’ve both been busy, and it doesn’t look like the weekend will be much better. (Not that I don’t want to see you, because I do, but I’m assuming Harry may want to find you at odd times with questions until Saturday. At least potentially. And who knows how Saturday will go.)

On Cedric: I did pass along our agreed cryptic message and when I saw him in the hall yesterday, he was heading for the library, looking determined. It does seem like the interviews on Tuesday stirred up some nastiness again, from what I heard in class yesterday morning from the 3rd years (that class is Slytherins and Hufflepuffs, and it’s becoming my barometer for mood) and last night from my 6th year NEWTs.

(Speaking of which. I feel sorry for all four of the champions, really: those interviews looked rather miserable.)

How're things with you?

I hope today is treating both of you better than yesterday. I wanted to follow up on yesterday evening, in hopes of helping you make your case more strongly, Minerva, that the Carrows have no business teaching here.

As I told Poppy, Ptolemy Baddock had come looking for me for help with a NEWT question, and we were walking back up towards the astronomy classroom, when we heard quite the commotion from Alecto Carrow's room. By the time we got there, Lucius Malfoy had obviously just gotten the better hand, and given a moment to compose himself, seemed well enough given the circumstances. (I did, of course, carefully ask if he needed assistance of any kind.)

Alecto was in not nearly as good a state: Ptolemy helped me get her to Poppy's care, but she was quite vile in her language as we did so.

By the time I came back, Mr Malfoy had left. I understand that he paused briefly by the Slytherin common room to wish Miss Parkinson a happy birthday, and to speak briefly to both his son and Mr Marvolo, and then went off with Raz for a drink in Hogsmeade.

Raz stopped by later to check in with me. While he was circumspect about Mr Malfoy's thoughts about recent events, he did want to warn me to stay well out of the way of the Carrows - not that I had any intention of doing otherwise, naturally. But when I start to worry about my well-being with them... well, I feel particularly for the children in our care. As you both know, dueling of any kind has never been my strong point, and besides that, it seems so disruptive to the learning they should be doing.

Related to that, I know you've likely seen some of the comments about Brutka's Transfiguration classes, but I've heard even more comments about it today, as my own classes have been gathering. If the students who've been struggling most needed only to have a kind word or another explanation - especially in a topic as key as transfiguration - we're certainly not doing our duty by either our students, or the future needs of the Protectorate, surely?

I do also understand there's been a certain amount of conversation among the Slytherins about events in particular - Ptolemy mentioned it to me today as well. Perhaps Horace might have a word with them to remind them of appropriate topics for conversation and behavior?

At least that's what it feels like - at least half my family has sent me one asking for news of yesterday. First, the Prophet had quite a decent story, all things considered. (And yes, Mum, the students in those photos are both in my classes, though I won't teach them till tomorrow.) It was quite a lot of pageantry, though.

We gathered at 2pm in the castle entry, to walk all the students out to the Forbidden Forest. They'd cleared a pathway in, and set up pavillions and seats and it was all quite safe, though several students jumped a bit at some rustling in the underbrush. We all got settled (by house, which is just convenient, since the prefects know their housemates well), and the Lord Protector and the others with him all got there. Some students, of course, got to sit with their parents or guardians - always a treat to see each other during term-time.

Once everyone was quiet, Parvati came out wearing that beautiful dress. The crown was mostly flowers from Pomona's greenhouse (with a few herbs traditionally used for this hunt, so she said at breakfast) and a few very early buds from outside, I think. She sat, and we all waited - well, rather longer than people wished, maybe. It's still not exactly warm out, and our younger students do get a tad restless.

But then the unicorn appeared on the far side of the clearing, away from the seating, and walked very slowly over to her and knelt, and put its head in her lap. Really, there's a reason people make tapestries of it, as it's a beautiful sight, like nothing else on earth. She petted it a little, and then stood, and put a rope carefully around its neck, and led it off. (They'd built a little temporary stable for it on the grounds.)

We then all paraded back - I just had a moment to make my entry yesterday - and all went into feast. Very nice, I must say, with some special treats for the students, and of course, some quite extraordinary dishes for the high table including a gorgeous spun sugar and marzipan subtlety of a unicorn for the pudding course. They set up a number of tables on the dais, though of course I was well toward the back, as we were honoring the Lord Protector and his chosen guests.

At the end, everyone stood, and waited while the Lord Protector and his guests processed out, and then we sent everyone off to bed. I helped Pomona round up the stragglers, and get them all into the house common room at least, and then did a bit of walking the halls to make sure we had no strays before I came up to bed. Quite a long day, all told, especially given we had normal classes in the morning, even though I cancelled last night's observations.

Last weekend's freedom was a fleeting thing - I've been in the midst of marking essays from our 2nd years, 4th years, and the NEWT students this week, all of which required extensive comments.

The beginning of the week started well - I had a lovely afternoon tea with Poppy, just to chat. We wandered over a number of topics, but I think she was amused by the combination of my abysmal scores in both Herbology and Potions (I have to admit, they were the worst of my OWLs), and my general knowledge of remedies useful to growing children. (Being one child of many requires you to learn some things out of sheer self-preservation.)

Since then, though, it's been all essay marking, and wondering how to adjust observation times for the weather, and trying to get alternate class topics prepared, and so I find myself at the weekend feeling rather wrung out.

This evening, though, I'm going into Hogsmeade for dinner, as a friend of mine is coming through. It'll be good to catch up with her more easily than by owl or floo. I may be up late to finish the essays after that, mind you - but a break will be nice.
