Narcissa,
I do hope you’re well, and that the Witches’ Institute event yesterday went enjoyably for you. I’m writing because I’ve two questions where I’d greatly appreciate your guidance.
First, Raz and I have had several inquiries about whether we’ll be at this or that Frost Faire event, and we’re trying to figure out which should get priority. Would you be willing to advise? Our teaching schedules (particularly mine) do complicate things, but I’m sure we can arrange some time outside of that.
The second is a bit more delicate. Raz and I have been working together since last spring to get my Defence skills in somewhat better form. But various matters - Healer Stint, among others - lead him to suggest if I might ask who you work with, or if you might have another suggestion. Raz is a wonderful teacher, of course, but we’re both well aware that it’s an area where outside perspective might be all to the good.
Thank you, as always, for your time and any insight you might have.
Aurora

Date: 2012-01-24 10:52 pm (UTC)However, I am glad you thought to ask about the Faire. The Burdett-Couttses have been simply teeming with brilliance over all their arrangements. I should say that the Opening Ceremonies are not to be missed, particularly if one enjoys skating exhibitions: my understanding (and do realise that this is gleaned from Gabriel and Nicola's hints, as they will insist on playing close to the vest!) is that there's to be an exhibition depicting the coming of the Romans to the British Isles, complete with a duel choreographed on skates. Then there shall be the erection of a bridge which is intended to provide a pedestrian walk across the river for the whole of the festival). Beyond that, I do know that they've arranged for a reproduction arena about a third the size of the original Coliseum, which shall be used for various entertainments each evening. I gather that Gabriel drew inspiration from that book that's so popular now, oh, you know the one the children have all been reading. Something about hunger? Well, between that and the concept of Londinium Novum, I fully expect to see chariot races, something by Plautus and lions among the bill of fare on any given night. All perfectly safe, of course! Just for the flavour of the original Roman appetites.
Speaking of which, I do know that Portico, Il Bargello and several other restaurants have planned special menus, as well. You and Raz might wish to book a private seating. I've been told that some packages even include serving maids in chitons and feature music whilst dining. There will be baths, of course, in the Romanesque style, which I'm sure Raz will find refreshing for his leg. Mind you both go to one of the better establishments; I'm sure that Elysian or Ouroboros will have outposts with their own staff of masseurs.
Now, as for your other question. I fully agree that it is imperative for a witch to keep up her defence skills. Sadly, my personal trainer is ... unavailable, at present (leave of absence). But I know that Mr Blackmun comes highly recommended, as does that young woman at the Landsdowne. What is her name? Hornby, I think. And if neither of them will do, I think Maebh has a man, I could inquire if you like.

Date: 2012-01-24 11:20 pm (UTC)Thank you, indeed. I knew you'd be able to lay out the possibilities far more clearly than Raz or I had been able to manage thus far based on the hints in the papers and passing conversations.
I'll certainly discuss all of that with him, and I'm sure we'll find quite a few events to interest us. I must say the hints of the Opening Ceremonies sound particularly lovely to watch, and of course, Raz does have a particular interest in the arena, if they run to duels as well as chariots and plays.
The book you're thinking of is Pure Hunger, and yes, it's quite the rage here. I've seen more than a few sleepy faces in class the last few weeks where I'm sure that's the cause. Enough that I stopped in to pick up a copy for myself this afternoon, as a treat once I'm past Saturday's YPL event, in fact.
On your other recommendations: I'd hate to put you to any trouble, so do let me run those names past Raz, and see what he says.
As to the gathering - well, yes. And it is quite hard when one is looking to balance numbers fairly. Of course, I'm glad to help out in that way, but I know there were a few hurt feelings. I must say Miss Parkinson, in particular, did a lovely job of making everyone feel welcome: she's becoming a credit to your influence.
