Yesterday's event

Congratulations to all the hard work of all three teams yesterday. I understand from the planning staff that there will be some additional individual feedback forthcoming for our CCF students, but overall, they were quite pleased with your creative problem-solving and approach to the various challenges. And to our guests, I hope you enjoyed the outing.
An event of this complexity takes many people’s time and effort: we could not have conducted these exercises without the efforts of the attending CCF planning staff, Aurors, Auror trainees, MLE staff, and Healer Kerr. They gave up a Saturday to join us, and I’m sure we all appreciate their time and careful attention.
My particular thanks to Mr Smith, Miss Bones, and Mr Macmillan for their help (and to their respective team leaders for the loan), and especially to Mr Smith for his quick thinking. As you may have heard by now, Miss Haley is quite recovered and back in her dorm.

Date: 2012-01-29 03:45 pm (UTC)Andie may already have written, but I wanted to write as well with more details. First, she’s fine now. During the YPL event yesterday, she was along as one of the volunteers in the tasks the older students had to complete. Something happened - and I’m still not sure how - and she and two other first years were directed away from where they should have been.
She slipped - it was all over snow and ice and rough ground - and wrenched her ankle, and lost her wand up slope. I spotted they were gone fairly quickly, and found the other two quite fast, but it took us longer to find Andie, as she’d slipped out of sight down a bit of a drop. By the time we found her - well, Healer Kerr says it was good we found her when we did, or it might have been quite a bit worse, given the cold.
I swear she’s all right now: she spent the night in the infirmary with Poppy taking excellent care of her. As I said, I don’t know what happened, but intend to find out. I had a very difficult round of questioning from the Aurors and MLE along yesterday (most of whom I don’t know well), but intend to make inquiries of my own going forward. And I certainly plan to be extra careful with her, and her safety, after this.
I’m sorry for not writing immediately last night but once they finally let me go for the evening, I was in no fit state to put quill to journal. I did check on her last night, and will see if she wishes to speak with me further today, as well. And, well. I expect this week to be quite busy, but if you’d like to speak directly, I’ll certainly make time.

Date: 2012-01-29 04:03 pm (UTC)Still don’t feel quite myself (though much better, and I’ll even admit I’m glad you talked me into the potion.) I plan to stay put and rest until dinner, once I’ve got the necessary letters done.
AreWas it too muchDo you need time on your own tonight, instead of our usual plans? I’d understand.

Date: 2012-01-29 06:49 pm (UTC)You know, we don't have to talk about this now, but... you might give some thought to passing along your YPL duties to another Professor next year. After all, you've been doing this what, three years now? And it was rather foisted upon you, at that. I'm sure it was never intended to be a permanent position and that there are other staff members who would like to have a go at it.
Just give it some thought, yeah?

Date: 2012-01-29 07:18 pm (UTC)On your other. I'll think about it. But I've been thinking about it a while on and off, without much result.
Everyone I can think of, either wouldn't make it through the approval process, I'm sure isn't interested, or I don't trust to have the best interests of the students at heart long-term - or manage the arguments about how we should have more challenge, more risks, more difficulty.

Date: 2012-01-29 08:36 pm (UTC)I don't know that I ever told you about the interview process, really. But the point at which I knew I'd say yes, if they offered, was when I walked into the room with the other candidates, and listened to how they talked.
So many people look at our students as dolls. Pawns. Pieces to be moved around, or ignored, or whatever's convenient. Not just the halfbloods, though they come in for a lot of it, but everyone. Or everyone but their own personal special connections.
Hypatia knows I mess up - and will again, I'm sure, and certainly stretch myself thin.
But I hope there's something in seeing them as individuals, of looking not at what's easiest for me, but best for them. I'm not the only person who could do that, mind. And I find I'm unwilling to hand things over to anyone who'd do less.

Date: 2012-01-29 04:41 pm (UTC)I’ll make myself available on Tuesday with the initial parchment work you’ve asked for, and I definitely appreciate that you’ll be there. And, as you’ve asked, will let you make all the requests for correspondance from Felix directly, to avoid any appearance I might interfere.
On the rest: I’m not sure talking with you about it in detail at the moment is the right thing, but absolutely don’t blame you or anyone else at MLE for doing your jobs. Perhaps when everything’s settled, we might talk a little more.
