My thanks to those who have shared their sincere regrets for my husband's death. And to those who have been so helpful to me at an extremely difficult time.

My husband was many things in his life. His becoming a teacher surprised many who knew him, but he took to it so well. The stars in my life the past days have been his students telling me they appreciated both what he taught, and how he taught it. I wish we'd all had so many more years of him - his laugh, his gift for the right thing to say, his explanations, his many skills. His everything.

Many people have asked about my future plans. I'm somewhere I can rest, and think, and remember. My brother Storm will be handling most details and correspondence for now. Thank you for understanding.

Harry,

Words are so hard.

He loved you. Wanted you safe Wanted so much for you.

This. I won't lose you too Come talk? If you want can want?

Door always open to you. Whenever. Talk. Not talk. Anything you need.

No matter what else happens.

Sorry. Something's up with the floo, clearly. I can see it try and make the connection and then it just fizzes out. The connections here are always a little tricky, but this is much worse than usual.

No sense making you sit around and waste the afternoon. If they come back up while I'm still in my office, I'll write, yeah?

Not like the notes can't wait a week till I'm back in New London, anyway. There are such things as owls to get them to the couple of students who are interested.

Love -

Writing things down so they don't fall out of my head. (Which is full of other people's exams.)

First, an owl came for you when I was still having breakfast this morning. It looked like it might be related to whatever it is you said you were plotting, so I didn't open it and just left it on your desk. (Nashira's handy if you want to send a reply, and I won't need her for a few days.)

Second, can we practice those chained charms some more before we do another demonstration round for Harry? I've got the beginning of the sequence down - I like that variant of the shielding charm, quite a lot, actually. But when I get to the Deprehensio variant, I keep getting stuck, because I'm not sure what to do next. (I mean, I know it detects magical effects, it's figuring out what to do with what it detects that confuses me.) I might think faster on my feet than I used to, but there are times it's by a very small amount indeed.

Anyway. I'd rather not look a fool.

Third, Mum and Dad want to know if we'd come to supper once we're done here. I thought maybe not the first week we're off, since there's all the unpacking and things, but maybe the week after that? Mum thought Storm and Dittany and us, and that's it. (I think she sort of wants to talk about what to do about Theo, but I might be wrong.)

Fourth, Poppy

Going to try to get through as much of the exam marking as I can this afternoon, and I need to set up early again, but I'll be down for supper at the very least.

Raz and I both were delighted to host last night and we're certainly hoping to do something again over the summer. It was a particular pleasure to see people from different parts of our lives having such excellent (if sometimes extremely lively) conversations. I kept catching hints of all sorts of serendipitous discoveries of mutual interest in one topic or another.

I would never guessed that my father talking to Lionel Moon about some of the arcane beauties of accounting would turn into a conversation about the golden ratio and the implications for garden design, but I suppose I shouldn't be that surprised, it all being the beauty of numbers at root, as it were.

When I pointed out the new garden design that's going in now is based on various numeric patterns, they started laughing. Clearly, we'll have to have both of them and Septima over sometime this summer just to see the effect in full bloom. (And Pomona and my mother, of course, so someone will appreciate the actual plants properly.)

Anyway, the whole evening felt rather like that, introducing this person who was interested in this thing to that person who would love to talk about it. My particular thanks to those who were so generous with their time with both my current and former students. I'm sure they'll reward your attention at least five-fold.
alt_sinistra: (at ease)
I'm always rather amazed at how the spring hols feel so different from the winter ones. Part of it, of course, is a chance to be outside a bit more (I've had one very pleasant lengthy ramble already, and I hope for one or two more.) And of course the social commitments are much less hectic than over Christmas and New Year's.

Naturally, there are a few events I'm looking forward to. The Astronomy Guild lecture next Monday has a number of people attending already. Now I've seen the final programme, I think it's going to be a wonderful combination of explanation and demonstration. (We're already talking about topics for the summer series at the country Guild Hall, and for a lecture series to run through next year, so we're also taking suggestions for future topics. Here, or there'll be a box Monday night, or you can contact the Guild directly.)

And of course, I'm looking forward to our own plans a week Friday.

Beyond that, mostly I'm delighting in the chance to catch up with some reading, relax a little, and have a number of conversations we never seem to find time for during term.

(Mum, yes, I'd love lunch on Friday if you're still free.)
alt_sinistra: (in the far distance)
Miss Lonsdale. My office, immediately after lunch tomorrow. No excuses. Bring your notes and materials for this term with you.

Mr Moon. My office, half-one. The same. Wait by the stairs if Miss Lonsdale and I are not yet finished.

My thanks to the students who've offered to assist in the measurements and observations of the Bright-Deverill comet this week through the beginning of our holidays. If you haven't signed up, and are interested, the lists are on my board as usual.

You needn't fear that we're the only ones doing observations, so if something does come up - one of the challenges, or simply bad weather - there are other astronomers around the Protectorate also working on the project. Those of you who participate, however, will get credit in the eventual publication. I do ask that you let me know if you won't be able to assist at your scheduled time if possible.

5th and 7th students:
Revision sessions are now scheduled and posted in the usual places. As usual, additional sessions are possible at mutually agreeable times, and the projection stones not being used in this week's classes are available for brief loans for your own study work. I also have sample questions from past exams available for review.

Upcoming events:
The Astronomy Guild will be hosting another lecture evening on Monday, April 21st at 7pm. This one will focus on the theory of the music of the spheres, and will include both music and charmwork by way of illustration. Students, as this is during holidays, I certainly don't expect any of you to attend. If you'd like to, please see me for more details, and you would be quite welcome.

Third and seventh years:
I'm sure you'll all be glad to hear I am cancelling class on Friday evening, the 14th. (The weather looks unpromising for outside work, and from experience, I know that inside work will be full of distractions if we try.) Third years, I'll have an additional assignment for you in class on Friday, due a fortnight later. Seventh years, kindly apply yourself to your research projects for an extra two hours or so. I've got comment on the pieces you've turned in most recently if you want to stop by and collect them.

Students attending the lecture tonight:
Please be at the ground floor floo tonight, ready to step through at 6:40. We'll be returning around 11. Please bring something to take notes on. I'll give you a quick tour of the space so you know where things are, and then I'll have some duties at the front of the room during the first part of the lecture.

This week's schedule:
Due to the lecture tonight, no office hours today. I will be in my office Tuesday evening from 7 to 9, and then the rest of the week as usual. As always, other times may be possible if needed.

Just a reminder to students in the OWL and NEWT exam years that the projection stones make studying for the chart identification portions of the exams much more flexible. Stones can be checked out from me during my office hours, and used in the classroom at any point when I’m available to open it.

I also intend to continue my usual spring habit of additional study sessions (starting in February this year). I’m always glad to share sample questions, to mark practice charts or locational problems, or otherwise give you more practice. As I did last year, I'm also planning brief notes in the next few weeks about where I feel you've mastered the material, and where you could best apply your study time.

For those interested in February’s lecture in the Guild, we do have a few more spaces left. If you’ve not told me you’re interested, please do so by Wednesday. I’ll have some brief (and I promise interesting) prepartory reading for everyone - you can pick that up any time after Friday.

Comets

alt_sinistra: (public focus)
I’ve been asked to spread the word that the Astronomy Guild will be hosting a special presentation about the Bright-Deverill comet in February. Discovered last year by Guild Master Georg Bright and Guild member Cantus Deverill, it is expected to be quite bright when it approaches its closest point to the earth this April.

The lecture is intended for a general audience, as comets have particularly interesting implications for Potions, Divination, Herbology, and various subbranches of magic. Several Guild members will present on different aspects of the comet’s discovery, path, and implications. Specific topic details will be announced in Georg Bright’s journal as they are made.

The general presentation will begin at 7pm on Monday, February 10th, at the New London Guild Hall at Burlington House, Piccadilly. There will be some additional smaller topical discussions led by specialists from various fields beginning around 9pm, and if the weather is clear, the country Guild Hall in Cornwall will also be open for observation with assistance from various Guild members. You can reserve a seat by contacting the Guild - someone is by the floo during business hours.

My students know we have been discussing the comet in class this year as relevant to the curriculum. While attending this lecture is by no means required or expected, there is some room for students who wish to attend. If you are interested, please let me know below, or in person by January 15th, so we can consider arrangements.

I do hope everyone has a merry Christmas and a wonderful New Year.

Year's end

7th years - and especially my NEWT students - I wish you all the very best as you go off into new and wonderful things. You have all grown so much, and changed, and I’m sure you will go on to learn more and do more than we can dream of right now.

And for everyone, while this year has had a great many changes and challenges, I know I’m not alone in being impressed at how so many of you have learned and grown. I hope you all have a truly excellent summer, and I look forward to hearing all about it in the fall.

Speaking of - I’ve had a few questions about how I expect to spend my own holidays. Of course, part of my time will be spent settling into a new home (and all that involves), and I very much hope to relax and enjoy the summer a bit. But of course, I’ve got other projects as time allows: some ongoing work for the Astronomy Guild, revising my NEWT curriculum for next year, and my own research.

Those of you leaving school or simply looking for summer opportunities, I did hear of a few more this week - varying skill sets. If you’re interested, do let me know.

Thank you

I am overwhelmed by all those who were able to join us and celebrate on Saturday, and by everyone who’s offered good wishes for our marriage. More personal notes will be going out shortly, around our commitments at school.

For those curious about the details of the wedding, Tallie Powell (our planner) plans a series of entries in her journal highlighting many of the contributions to the day. There are a few questions nearly everyone seemed to have, so I hope answering them here will help.

My name: For a variety of reasons, I intend to remain Professor Sinistra in professional settings. I am delighted to now be Mrs Lestrange in social settings.

Raz and I currently expect to be in New London over the summer, but our precise plans and obligations are still a work in progress, and will be for a few weeks, at least.

Finally, I understand some were curious about the stars projected in the reception rooms. This is a varation of a method I developed for teaching over the last few years. Once term is over, I’d be glad to discuss further with anyone interested.

Students, we especially appreciate all your good wishes and congratulations, and we wish you could all have joined us. There will be a special treat tomorrow night at supper, as our last bit of formal celebration, and to ease into end of term exams. For those with questions, I will be in my office until half nine tonight, but no later, and hours are posted for the rest of the week.

In brief, since I had to dash to the Guild:

No pink.

No pink flowers, no pink decorations on the desserts, no pink napkins. (Nor pink sugared almonds, nor pink umbrellas in drinks, nor pink decorative bunting, nor pink charmed glitter, nor pink glowing mists, nor pink cherubs. Not that any of those should appear anyway.) No pink.

Instruct me, if you would, on the best way to make this abundantly clear to all concerned. Fit that can be heard clear to Hogwarts? Visit by Raz, at his sternest? Transfiguration of their hair colour until they see reason? Harassment by a swarm of kittens? En masse synchronised performance by my assembled female relatives, a la Greek chorus?

I'm already planning owls in the clearest possible terms, but anything else, please tell, and I will arrange it. Pity the penultimate one wouldn't actually help: it would give them something to do. Besides owl and firecall and journal me at all hours with "Just one little suggestion, dear." all of which are either entirely impractical, absolutely horrible, or (often) both.

Flowers: modern roses if he must, to fill things out, but I'd much rather things from the bouquet, or the species names Mum gave him. I know I lack artistic vision in the matter of flowers. I don't care. The other things smell wrong.

Dress: entirely splendid, and Joosh assures me that while a fitting in a fortnight would be best, we could make it work the day before if we had to. (And then gave me a ten minute lecture on doing nothing that might alter the shape of my body in the interim, and another ten minutes on managing the shoes. I've achieved 'stable' but am not quite at 'confident' yet. Clearly, I will be pacing my office this week.)

I hope to be in next Tuesday, but just in case OWLS eat all the available time and space (not as unlikely as I'd prefer, they're all quite nervy), I think we're in reasonable enough shape. I hope. You've got the hours I'm likely to be handy if you've questions, and I've got my list of the last few things Raz or I need to do ourselves.

(And if I've not said it enough, you have worked magic upon magic already getting the invites out and keeping everything straight.)

Several of you have inquired about the kittens in my office: the orange one is Mizar, and the black one is Suha. House points to the first person who can tell me why those names (that didn't hear it from me already.)

They are both quite friendly, but mind your quills if you don’t want them used as toys. In related news, I am currently practiced with ink removal charms, and glad to share the ones I’ve found most effective. Also several that help with more controlled kitten amusement and entertainment.

As usual before exams, I’ve extended my office hours. However, I need to make some firecalls this week in the afternoons. Please knock first if the door’s mostly closed, and it may be a few minutes (not many) before I’m free.

My newts: I’m saving Thursday and Friday for any last questions (your last round of practice theory exams are marked and you can pick them up whenever.) If you don’t come up with anything else, I have more locational magic problems for you, as that seems to be the thing you’re all most worried about.

5th years: for those of you who might be considering the Astronomy NEWT, I’m changing my requirements for continuing in the subject (in favour of more opportunity, rather than less.) We’ll talk more once you’re done with the OWL exams, as the NEWT in Astronomy takes a sharp turn from observation into theory, and it’s rather a different kind of study.

Was on the tower, had my journal closed.

Tell me what you can when you can? Please.

Linus told me about Cedric. And I skimmed.

Just.

Never mind

I gather there are kittens. And pixies. I can go do something about that.

On my way down to the library, unless there's somewhere I can be more use.

Students -

It looks like tonight will be quite clear, so I’ll have the tower open as soon as it’s dark. I’ll also be available for the usual conversation and questions about astronomy and related topics. (Though, you know me. I think everything’s related to astronomy. Come ask why, if you like.) I will be out Tuesday evening for a Guild meeting, but available the rest of the week as well.

The Lyriad meteor shower is currently ongoing - I was up watching for a bit before dawn, and it was not as impressive as some years, but easier to watch after moonset.

On Thursday, there will an lunar eclipse, beginning just before 8 at night. While this particular one is not deeply interesting (being very brief and extremely partial - only about half an arc second will be occluded) it is interesting because it is the last of a saros series.

We do not normally discuss these except in my newt years, but eclipses occur in a pattern, stretching over 18 years (18 years, 11 days, 8 hours, to be precise). We can use the larger series pattern to predict both when eclipses may occur, and what form they will take, due to the interactions of three separate sequences (The synodic month, the draconic month, and the anomalistic month. For the curious, the name of the middle of those three comes from old legends about a dragon eating the moon at the eclipses.)

This is the first series I’ve had the opportunity to observe in full (given weather, of course), but I also have my notes from the last half of the previous cycle (and of course, my predecessor’s observing journals, which cover cycles long before that) for anyone interested in comparisons.

Mum, Dad -

Madam Pinkness is being truly destructive. To teaching. To students. To trust and loyalty and the ability to work hard. To the things that matter most.

I’m about to do something that may cause a great deal of trouble. For you, not just me, if she follows through on her threats. I know you said, that bad weekend in January, that it’d be all right if that happened. I - some things just need doing.

Forgive me?

I had to tell you first. Because you matter too. Mum, that story you told last week, about balancing different loyalties, and talking to Storm and Dittany on Friday. Just - I’m trying to do the best thing by the people who can’t do it alone. And you’ve said you can manage.

I’ve held off because I love you, and I didn’t want you paying for something I did. That’s not fair. But it’s past time to do what’s right. I hope you understand
