A reminder

It is important to remember that the work and attention of many people has gone into providing the privilege of attending wonderful YPL summer (and school year) opportunities.

Today's difference of opinion was especially inappropriate given its location: a place where those who protect our realm must focus and concentrate on their duties. The students involved will have the opportunity to reflect - in detail - on their behavior, and will miss events until they have done so to my satisfaction and the satisfaction of the Aurors assigned to assist the YPL activities this week.

That said, these activities are a time for all students to learn and reflect on how they might offer their service to the Protectorate. We anticipated - correctly, it seems - that there might be some difficulties along the way, given the complex history of our world before our Lord Protector's glorious reign began. Our YPL activities are intended to allow all students a chance to step beyond the history of their families, and to determine how they wish to take their place in our current world. A single incident is therefore a learning experience for all of us, but repeated infractions (regardless of cause) will lead to removal from YPL activities, and thus also have a significant impact on your prospects after school.

All students are therefore reminded that when you are attending YPL activities, you are representing what should be the best of the Lord Protector's leadership in our world. You are expected to behave with moderation, dignity, and civility even in the most challenging circumstance. If that is not possible, you are responsible for finding the nearest senior student or supervising adult and asking for assistance.

Mister Longbottom and Mister Crabbe: I will, of course, also be sending a detailed note to your families, and they may, of course, consider taking further steps regarding your behaviour if they choose. As already expressed to both of you, you will also be expected to stay clear of each other for the remainder of the trip, and will be assigned to separate small groups for any individual activities, as well as adjusting the sleeping arrangments.

Any further questions may be addressed to me directly or by owl, as convenient.

January brings up such complex feelings. On the one hand, the night skies are so clear, especially around the new moon (as occurs on Monday). On the other, even I recognise the challenges of stargazing in northern climes in January.

Wool cloaks and jumpers and good gloves are all well and good - and necessary, this time of year. But a good simple warming charm is even better. It's a wonder Muggle astronomers ever got anything done, really.

Regrettably, the first years are not all up to that level of charms work yet (and to be honest, neither are some of the older students without rather a lot of time-wasting fussing), so I am here at my desk trying to decide on how to balance their observation time this week against Poppy's insistence that I deplete her stock of Pepper-Up potion more than necessary. There are some particular observations I'd like them to make this week, after all, if it's clear enough.

We did have a good conversation in class about the Great White Spot on Saturn, however. At least, I thought so. We'll see how much they retain for exams in the spring.
