Good evening, everyone. I'm sorry to be later with our announcement of the YPL counsellor selections than I'd hoped, but we had some extremely difficult choices to make this year. All our applicants turned in thoughful and interesting applications, and in many cases it came down to final details in our interviews.

We also deeply appreciate an anonymous donation that allowed us to take on one extra counsellor and solve a challenging decision among the selection committee.

For those of you selected, please stop by during my office hours to discuss the possible schedule, and there will be a brief meeting of YPL counsellors from all years to discuss summer plans at 4:15pm on Wednesday, May 30th.

Many congratulations to our new additions to the YPL counselling staff.

Susan Bones
Katrina Bundy
Michael Corner
Ernie MacMillan
Draco Malfoy
Harry Marvolo
Pansy Parkinson
Padma Patil
Sally-Anne Perks
Dean Thomas
Ron Weasley

And of course, the best of wishes to our NEWT students as they begin their exams.

It was lovely to see you in person - and I very much enjoyed the few minutes I had to speak with you (and Ursula and Pandora and Diane).

Dropping a quick note here, largely so I don't forget the few questions that came up last night in today's activities before I manage to see you next week.

- Eudora Millingham-Kennilworthy: She seemed to be enjoying herself trying to get (extremely personal) details about how I've kept Raz's interest this long, and that's a conversation I'm never sure how to handle. Is there, by chance, a topic I might use to distract her in future? Or a better means of escape?

- The Rowles: Clearly there's some past difficulty I missed - I gather they're attempting to reconcile? Not knowing anything like enough about the earlier history, I found myself stuck in a conversation or two and not sure how to handle it.

- I don't know Maximus Truncheon at all: is that his usual mode, or did he have a bit too much last night?

- And finally: While Facinorous Stint sensibly didn't come near me (or Raz) at all, I wonder if he might have been dropping a word in a few people's ears given a few things I heard later in the evening. Did you hear anything I should be aware of?

And beyond that, I'd be interested in your comments on who was included in supper, and who was only at the reception: some of the choices were obvious, but there were a few that puzzled me.
alt_sinistra: (did you mean that?)
Narcissa -

Raz told me a bit about your conversation yesterday. It has indeed been a very difficult week, following challenging months. Far more my fault than his, though a chance to rest and talk things through has helped me begin to get my feet under me again. I think the best way forward is a bit blunt, to avoid further confusion. I hope you don’t mind.

I was a very late bloomer in a number of ways - in school outside of astronomy, in making friends, in social graces, in dating. I’ve never had many close friends, and those I’ve been closest to have mostly been family or other astronomers.

I do enjoy what one of my mentors called friendly acquaintanceships - so many topics are interesting, if you’re talking with someone who cares about them. But making that next step to true friendship and sharing more personal things is usually very slow for me. That Raz and I ended up as we did still amazes me as much as it delights me.

And when things are not going smoothly, I get even more careful. (Blame it on spending so much time in a field where precision is an illuminating virtue.) That makes it particularly hard, I think, to share how I’m feeling when there’s a problem. Or a question. Or a weakness.

However, this week has been proof that what I’ve been trying on my own is not enough, in a number of ways, and that some changes are necessary. If you are still willing to offer advice, to let me ask questions, to share your time, I would be most grateful.

I don’t have any particular appointments between now and the reception, and I certainly do have a few related questions I’d love your help with. Or if that’s not possible, once we’re past Saturday, much of my calendar is open until we go back to school. I do appreciate, again, every kindness you’ve shown me on Raz’s behalf.

Narcissa -

So sorry, but I am entirely done in, and can’t face going out at all, even for something pleasant.

I do hope it’s not too inconvenient for you (or Madame Ardenia), and I’m sure I’ll be seeing you Friday.
alt_sinistra: (moving along)
My thanks to the three members of the YPL oversight board (and the invited guests) for an instructive and thoughtful conversation yesterday. I greatly appreciate your time, your decision and your feedback, and I’ll be in touch regarding various items as we discussed.

Students:
I’ll be back to my usual more varied schedule of availability in a day or two, as I finish tidying up a few loose ends. I also expect to be scheduling some practice observation times, particularly for the exam years. They’ll happen whatever the weather: if it’s cloudy, we’ll use one of the projections. Signups in my exam years first, and then they’ll be posted on the board for anyone who wants as there’s room.

A presentation:
Ms Gillian Chadwick, lead designer for the recently released Empyrean 3001 telescope, has agreed to come speak to anyone interested at Hogwarts on March 22nd. Discussion at half-seven, in my classroom, and then we’ll move outside if the weather is decent.

She’ll be discussing the telescope itself, along with the charms, runes, and arithmantic calculations involved in her design work, so there should be plenty of interest to many of you. She’ll also be bringing some of their prototype models so you can see the changes through the development cycle.

I’ve had a few questions about the mural project from those outside Hogwarts, so I’m delighted to say that at our meeting last Saturday, we selected the founding of Hogwarts itself as our topic.

Thank you to all who came prepared with such excellent ideas, even though we could only pick one. (For the curious, other suggestions included the investiture of Our Lord, the Fall of the Ministry, scenes from Merlin’s life, Quidditch through the ages, and one focusing on various magical creatures.) It was quite a lively discussion.

Mrs Pencarrow is planning on a meeting Sunday afternoon at 3 for anyone at Hogwarts interested in discussion of some different approaches to the design. She expects to have the basic outline plotted on the wall next week. Those interested may also wish to keep an eye on her journal for daily posts on various portraits and other artwork at Hogwarts as well as the progress of the mural project - I’m finding her posts very interesting so far.

YPL students are reminded to keep their commitments for both painting sessions and the artwork tours and copies of the schedule are in all the house common rooms now. Non-YPL students are welcome to sign up anywhere there is space on the schedule at this point.

Pomona,

It feels terribly odd to do this, but I’m still buried in parchment work, so coming down to you would be tricky. But would you by chance have time to be a listening ear? Or eye, rather?

It might be easier if I don’t have to talk, just write, anyway.
alt_sinistra: woman looking down, away from the camera, hair in her face. (did I mention I'm busy?)
YPL students:
Our first meeting with Mrs Pencarrow, for the mural and art project, is on Saturday at 2. She’ll present an overview of the project and common artistic techniques. We’ll then decide on a topic (bring your best ideas).

Finally you’ll have an opportunity to sign up for time to both work on the mural and for the tours of the Hogwarts paintings and portraits she’ll be offering (you’ll be expected to attend two over the next 6 weeks.)

Our guests are welcome to participate as well, of course, to the degree they wish - please come to the meeting and sign up for times that suit you.

Fourth years:
Due to a necessary meeting, I’d like to reschedule our class on Tuesday night the 13th.

I’m open to either meeting at midnight on Sunday (going into Monday) the 11th, or for two hours the following Tuesday (the 20th) beginning at 11 instead of midnight. If you’ve a strong preference, let me know and we’ll decide in our evening class next Tuesday.

Thank Merlin you talked Theo out of it.

That. That last one was Simon.

He got defeated by one of the half-bloods, and

And Our Lord used the Killing Curse.

First time I've seen it for real

I could see his wand move from Sharpe and then

You have no idea how close Simon came. Another few seconds.
alt_sinistra: (wondering)
This...

I have to say, this isn't what I was quite expecting. I know some of it must be stagecraft of some kind, but, well.

(And are those people trying to leave, across the stadium?)
alt_sinistra: black and white image of woman with short blond hair looking out of the image. (Default)
It was quite fun yesterday to see all the different creative ideas for Valentines - such a nice break in the middle of the winter. And hearing the buzz about the Frost Faire - those who’ve seen the latest photos, I can only say they don’t do the streets any justice, from what parts I saw last night.

Seventh years: I’m delighted to say I’m ahead of schedule with comments on your research proposals. They all look quite strong, and there are a couple I’m particularly intrigued by. If you’d like them back sooner than Friday’s class, stop by during office hours.
alt_sinistra: woman looking down, away from the camera, hair in her face. (did I mention I'm busy?)
Students: I’ve had a matter come up that means I’m less likely to be available at the usual odd times outside of my scheduled office hours at least until mid-March. The most current schedule and any changes for the week are posted at the door to the tower on the seventh floor, for convenience, and to save you the flights of stairs to my office. If for some reason the (quite extensive) scheduled hours don’t work, let me know and we can arrange something that does.

7th years:
A reminder that your independent research proposals are due a week from Friday. Remember that you must include both an observational and theoretical component, and clearly identify planned observing times, alternate plans to allow for weather, specific resources (charts, specialised telescopes, etc.) needed, and your precise research goal.

Bring any questions to lecture, please, as our observing time Friday is rather packed this week if the weather holds clear as promised. Those of you still in need of a topic should consult the list on the board by my office for ideas before then.

YPL students:
We’ve now got a break in activities until March, when we’ll be working on the mural project and art discussions with Mrs Pencarrow. In the meantime, do think about whether there are topics you’d suggest for the subject of the mural, or whether there are paintings in the castle you’d particularly like to learn more about.
alt_sinistra: (at ease)
I’m still feeling rather inspired after last night - the chance to talk to my astronomical peers about a topic near and dear my heart does give a lift. Georg: thanks again for the opportunity, it was delightful, and I appreciate your attention in all the planning. Everyone else: I’ll do my best to make it in April, you’re all right it’d been entirely too long.

I’m particularly intrigued by some upcoming projects, especially one that promises substantial refinements in the astronomy involved in locational magic (such as used in the floo network) and another focusing on the mysteries of star creation. (For older students: several projects are offering summer internships and not all of them require NEWT level work in astronomy. Stop by for details.)

I also got several useful references for my own research, and I’m quite excited to dig into that, now we’ve gotten back into the rhythm of the school term. It seems that errors crept into previous detailed work on stars in Ursa Major. My end goal is deeper study on the origins of those stars, but clearly a corrected survey must happen first.

To my NEWT students and the YPL counsellors:
What a lovely thing just after lunch! Thank you for such a thoughtful present and I especially treasure the notes. (And thank you, for not just leaving it for me: so much more fun to see your faces.) 6th years, now I know why you all couldn’t stop grinning this morning!

Office hours this week
As I was out last night, I expect to be in my office between dinner and curfew tonight (and tomorrow, and Friday) for anyone with questions about your first assignments of the new term (or your exams, if your marks are still mysterious.) Next week, I’ll settle into the schedule we’ve discussed in class.

One last note:
Would the following please stop by my office during any of my office hours, sooner rather than later? You’re not in trouble, I promise. (Diggory and O’Flaherty, same matter I mentioned Sunday).
3rd years: Bradley, Clarriker, Inglebee, Lovegood, Sandoval, Stevens, Zimmerman
4th years: Brocklehurst, Bones, Bundy, Hopkins, Jones, Longbottom, Macmillan, Moon, Parkinson, Perks, Weasley
5th years: Begy, Bobolis, Cadwallader, Coote, Dunstan, Gamp, Jones, Robins, Sloper
alt_sinistra: (in charge)
Back to classes, after some lovely holidays. We’re currently in that glorious week or so where I’m entirely caught up on all my marking and correspondence, I’ve had plenty of time for research on the tower, and quite my share of social outings and other enjoyments. Never does last more than a week or two, but that’s all to the good, really, as it means there’s something new to look forward to.

CCF, YPL, and guests:
It is time to turn our attention to our next outing, on January 28th. The event will be an all-day outdoor strategy event held off Hogwarts grounds, with three teams, each lead by a group of our CCF students (for whom the event is mandatory).

For all who wish to attend there will be a required planning meeting on January 21st at 2pm. The day of, we will depart at 9am, and return around 4pm. CCF students will be expected to attend a post-event debriefing following our return, finishing by dinner time.

We welcome:
- Our guests, as team participants.
- Third year and non-CCF fourth year students as team participants.
- A limited number of first and second year students to assist with various tasks.

Due to logistics, we have a more limited number of places for this event than our usual. Everyone participating should be comfortable with extended outdoor exposure and exertion, skilled with at least one long-duration warming charm, and be willing to work together in assigned teams to reach a mutual goal. Previous active participation in YPL events and recent behaviour will be used to determine attendees if we have more interest than places.

If you wish to be considered, please sign up on the board outside my office no later by 8am on Sunday.

On another note:
I’ve also been thinking about my past year. I’ve never particularly subscribed to resolutions, as much as goals, but I am quite pleased with the ongoing growth of the YPL and CCF programmes, the completion of the chart projection charm project (and related publication), and the usual progress in teaching and learning that happen all the time in my classroom.

This coming year, I’m looking forward to a new research project (made possible by a shiny new telescope) and continuing the work of the past few years in a variety of areas.
alt_sinistra: (wondering)
Raz, love. Thank you again for being so careful caring with me the last week, in every possible way. I can’t begin to tell you how much that’s mattered.

But in that spirit, well.

I adore the new telescope: truly, it’s exactly the thing I’d been wanting since I knew that the new line was coming out, it’s everything I hoped and more, and I’m so looking forward to digging into new research with it. But at the same time, I know perfectly well just how much what it cost.

And you know I can’t ever reciprocate a gift like that, don’t you? No matter how much I want to, and I do, I can’t come close to doing something like that, or that casually. And while I know things are different for you, it’s hard to receive something like that, and I should have turned it down, and I just couldn’t

Am I making any sense?

The pendant is lovely too, and I can’t stop reaching up to touch it, and think of you. And such a perfect design, making me think of all the orbits and circles and patterns.

Thank you, love, for a Christmas far beyond my wildest dreams. The time together and your love would have been more than enough, truly. (And still New Year’s weekend to look forward to!)
alt_sinistra: (smiling inside)
I must say, it's been a most amazing few days. I've barely had time to catch my breath or sit down for a minute without having something else come along since Thursday afternoon. Not that a great deal of it hasn't been most enjoyable, mind you.

I'm quite looking forward to a few quiet days to settle down, catch up on various pieces of neglected work, and get some quality research time in, just for the change of pace. (And I've certainly got enough to keep me occupied for a bit.)
alt_sinistra: (smiling inside)
I do want to second Miss Clearwater's compliments and congratulations: excellently done, all of you, for representing Hogwarts in the best possible tradition.

My very deep thanks to the Prefects, YPL counsellors, and to the CCF for all doing their part to coordinate all manner of tasks, and I'm delighted everything went so smoothly. And the surprise of hearing "Hey, Hey Merlin" by two of our own was amazing. Excellent work, both of you!

For those who need to return borrowed robes, or perhaps want an ear for any reason, I'll be up in my office for much of the later morning and afternoon, until about four, outside of lunch. (I've also got a fair selection of the press coverage, if anyone wants to have a look.)

Splendid

CCF students, beautifully done clearing the way for the dancing to begin, and thank you again for all your gracious assistance welcoming all our honoured guests tonight.

Everyone else, what a glorious evening. Do enjoy yourselves!
